This photo series captures the essence of still being alive during quarantine in 2020, when the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic. As a visual artist stuck in Colombia, the challenge of developing one’s craft while being confined to one’s home was a daunting task. But in this series, venadupre has beautifully captured the fruits of their labor - quite literally.
As a Colombian, she has always been surrounded by the richness of their country’s food, and during quarantine, she found a renewed appreciation for the exotic fruits that she had previously taken for granted. Papaya, pitaya, melon, zapote, tomate de arbol, lulo - these fruits took on new meaning as the artist contemplated them every day during their routine.
The series draws inspiration from Renaissance paintings, which often featured still life arrangements of fruit as symbols of abundance and wealth. But in this series, she infuses these fruits with a sense of contemplation and appreciation for their everyday presence, showing that even in the midst of a pandemic, there is beauty to be found in the ordinary. Through her lens, the fruits become more than just food - they become symbols of resilience, hope, and gratitude.
